The Great Ice Cream Run Day 1 - Staunton, VA to Frackville, PA (June 22, 2009):

We'll be invading Heisler's Dairy Bar, for an evening of ice cream, and miniature golf. 

 

Highway Route: 266 miles

Get back on I-81 and keep heading north through VA, WV, MD, and into PA

Take Exit 107 for PA-209 East and follow it into Pottsville, if you plan to do the brewery tour.

If the tour isn't your cup of tea, just keep heading north on I-81 and take Exit 124 for Frackville to get to the hotels.

  Alternate Route:  362 miles

If you like to travel at a little slower pace or get a better look at the areas you're passing through, the alternate route could be for you! 

You might want to consider picking up a sandwhich for lunch before you leave Staunton as there are numerous little picnic areas along Skyline Drive to stop and enjoy a quiet lunch.

Head east on US-250 through Waynesboro to pick up Skyline Drive, where the Blue Ridge Parkway leaves off

Skyline Drive comes to an end in Front Royal, VA.  At the end of the road, make a right onto US-340.

Follow this up to I-66 and head west to I-81.

Follow I-81 North through WV, MD, and into PA.

At Exit 90, exit onto PA-72 and head east.

Make the first left onto PA-1001 and follow it until it joins up with PA-443.

Make a left off 443 onto Gold Mine Rd. and enjoy some twisties up to PA-325.

Make a right onto 325 and follow this up to PA-209.

Head east on 209 all the way into Pottsville, home of the Yuengling Brewery.

At the intersection of 209 and PA-61, make a left onto 61 North and follow this up to Frackville, our destination for the night.
